HISTORY OF DIVINE WORD CENTRE, CHENNAI

VISION MISSION STATEMENT

It was in the year 1995 the SVD formation board found the need to establish another study house due to the increasing number of vocations and the need to find a quality education to our formees. The general council approved the decision and with the tireless effort, Fr. Ganavaram and Fr. Antonysamy zeroed in the present plot on the holy mount of St. Thomas.   In April, 1996, the provincial council appointed Fr. Ashok Kumar, a former provincial as the first Rector of the proposed house and he, residing in the tiny sacristy of the Shrine saw the completion of the building with necessary planning and permits.  On June 18, 1997, the newly built house was blessed by the Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, Most Rev. Aruldass James and was inaugurated by the then provincial of India-South province, Fr. Augustine Kanjamala.

This house plays a very important role in the formation of our young SVDs as they do their graduation studies in the prestigious Loyola College run by Jesuits, and it is where they also make discernment in going ahead in this religious life as they proceed ahead to the stage of postulancy before the novitiate.  The serene environment coupled with spiritual vibration of the holy mount of St. Thomas provides conducive atmosphere in the very formation of our younger brothers here.  They are also exposed to various realities of life as they commute daily by foot and by bus and train every day.  They also get ample opportunities in pastoral involvement by taking catechism classes in the parish and conducting choir in the Shrine as well as in the Parish Church.

Till date, hundreds have passed through this institute and they have nostalgic feelings towards their alma mater.  This institute will always play a crucial role in the formation of our SVDs as it vibrates with academic excellence along with spiritual exuberance.

Fr. A. Jesu SVD, Fr. S. Kulandaisamy, SVD,  Fr. Salathe Nathan, SVD ,  Fr. Augustine Karamel, SVD , Fr. George Mepurath, SVD, Fr. Francis Thuruthimattom, SVD, Fr. Kingston Kudalane, SVD,  Fr. Joseph Anthu, SVD, Bro. Francis SVD, Fr. Florence Minj SVD, Fr. Lawrence Bose SVD served the seminary with great dedication in the past.

Presently Fr. Bali Reddy (Rector), Fr. Valan (Procurator) and Bro. Francis (Moderator) are carrying on the same mission creatively to be relevant to the present day realities.
